The Portuguese Industry of Preserves, mainly of Fish, has been in existence for more than 160 years, having been born in exportation and for export. There have been reports that canned sardines from Setúbal were sent to the 1855 Paris Exhibition, Therefore, one of the traditional sectors of our economy. There are currently 19 fish canning companies in operation, 15 in the Mainland and 4 in the Autonomous Region of the Azores, which contrasts, for example, with the 152 companies that worked in 1938. Although this number has substantially decreased, the truth Is that these 19 companies produce more and better, all of them very current, and economically and financially much more robust than those then. In recent years, large investments have been made in this sector, both in the construction of new units and in the modernization of existing units.
